FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Eye Laser & Cataract Centre | Cape Town, Paarl & V&A Waterfront

We answer your most common questions about laser vision correction, cataract surgery, and refractive eye procedures at our state-of-the-art clinics in Cape Town.

1. What is the best type of laser eye surgery for me?

The best procedure depends on your eye health, age, prescription, and lifestyle. We offer Z-LASIK, TransPRK, and ICL surgery. After a detailed diagnostic assessment, your surgeon will recommend the most suitable option.

2. Is laser eye surgery painful?

No, laser eye surgery is typically painless. Most procedures use numbing eye drops, and patients may feel only mild pressure or discomfort. Recovery is usually fast and well-tolerated.

3. How long does laser vision correction take?

The procedure itself takes around 10–15 minutes per eye, but you should allow up to 2 hours for the full visit, including preparation and post-op instructions.

4. What are the risks of laser eye surgery?

All surgeries carry some risk. However, laser eye surgery is extremely safe, especially when performed by experienced surgeons using advanced technology like Schwind AMARIS and Ziemer Z8 Femto lasers. Risks may include dry eyes, glare, or under-correction – most of which are temporary or treatable.

5. How long is recovery after LASIK or TransPRK?

Most patients return to daily activities within 24–48 hours after LASIK and 3–5 days after TransPRK. Full visual stabilisation can take a few weeks.

6. Does medical aid cover laser eye surgery?

Laser vision correction is generally not covered by medical aid unless prescribed for a specific medical condition. However, cataract surgery and many therapeutic procedures are covered – especially if listed under Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs).

7. Can I have laser eye surgery if I have dry eyes?

Mild dry eye may not be a barrier. In fact, we offer E-Eye IRPL therapy to treat meibomian gland dysfunction before laser surgery, improving tear film stability and outcomes. Severe dry eye may require alternative treatments.

8. What is the ideal age for laser vision correction?

The ideal age is between 20 and 45, when your prescription is stable. After 45, patients may benefit more from presbyopia-correcting lens implants or refractive lens exchange (RLE).

9. How do I prepare for my eye laser consultation?

Avoid wearing contact lenses for a few days beforehand, as they can affect your corneal shape. Bring your prescription, medical aid info, and any previous eye records. Our team will perform a full diagnostic scan and discuss your options.
