Dr. Kruger offers a free 30-minute suitability evaluation for people who are interested in refractive surgery, including LASIK or femto ZLASIK, that would like to find out whether if they are a suitable candidate. Appointments can be made by phoning 021 9100 300.

There are two steps in femto Z LASIK eye laser procedures.

During the first step, the Intralase laser method is used to create a corneal flap. This is a 100% blade-free approach to create the thin flap of tissue that the doctor folds back in order to complete step 2.

The second step of the procedure utilises our advanced Schwind AMARIS eye laser 7D tracking technology that reshapes the cornea in order to correct the unique imperfections of your visual system. Everyone is different and your eyes are as unique as your finger print, which is why thorough pre-operative testing with the advanced Wavefront Technology is so important to make femto ZLasik a truly personalised laser eye treatment.

While LASIK complications are rare – when they do occur they are primarily related to the use of the microkeratome. The Femto Zlasik Method is 100% blade-free, exceptionally advanced, and has been shown to provide superior visual outcomes. Patients report rapid visual recovery, painless, bloodless with less fluctuations in vision during the recovery period, fewer problems with glare and halo’s at night and better quality of vision overall, particularly in terms of their ability to see well in low light. There is also a lower incidence of regression or the need for enhancement procedures.

To date, the Ziemer Z8 Femto ZLASIK combined with our Schwind AMARIS eye laser technology is the safest and best technology in the world.

NASA astronauts and U.S. fighter pilots can have laser vision correction surgery today because of the exclusive, validated safety and precision performance of femto ZLASIK technologies. Better results are expected for every patient, but in particular for patients with irregular astigmatism and thin corneas.

Advanced eye LASIK in Cape Town

Personalized Laser Vision Correction

Advanced eye laser Lasik vision correction involves a personal and unique laser vision correction that is designed for each eye individually. Much like in the case of a fingerprint, each individual’s vision is completely unique to their set of eyes. Up until recently, -2.00 diopter treatments for two or more different people have been interchangeable. However, no two individual’s corneal curvatures and aberrations correspond exactly, even in the event of their prescriptions being the same. This fact is taken into account when creating a personalised laser pattern with the wavefront-guided technology, and no two “treatment prescriptions” are the same. Thus improved outcomes can be expected for each person who undergoes treatment with this Advanced eye laser Schwind AMARIS Lasik system.

Advanced eye laser Lasik System consists of the following procedures:

1. The Advanced Diagnostic workstation MS39 and Paramus:

All patients who seek or are prescribed Wavefront Lasik treatment receive thorough diagnostic screening using specialised equipment. This includes:

The Orbscan II corneal topography, a process through which the whole cornea is analysed and the corneal curvature and thickness is measured.

WaveScan-based digital technology. This process determines the presence of pre-operative higher-order aberrations, as well as the singular imperfections that are inherent to each person’s vision. A detailed map of the eye is produced, quite similar to a fingerprint. No two maps are identical – as a matter of fact, each procedure is designed according to the singular characteristics of the individual in question’s eye. The information that is captured by means of the WaveScan technology is relayed to the laser, which provides an astonishing new level of accuracy. This improved level of measurement yields up to 25 times more accuracy than those standard methods used for prescribing spectacles and contact lenses.

This complete diagnostic information enables the surgeon to ascertain how the patient in question will benefit from Advanced Eye Laser Lasik treatment.

If meaningful higher-order aberrations are detected (such as those found in cases of irregular astigmatism) Advanced Eye Laser Lasik surgery would univocally improve the patient’s quality of vision. Advanced Eye Laser Lasik surgery utilises an optimised optical zone that lowers the risk for visual disturbances, such as halos and glare at night. Patients with high myopes or thin corneas benefit from the proven ability that Wavefront Lasik treatment has displayed in terms of reducing the amount of tissue removed for a given level of correction. Therefore, less tissue will have to be removed in order to achieve the desired results (saves up to 30% corneal tissue).

2. Advanced Eye Laser Lasik Treatment Calculation Software

The three main aspects taken into account when calculating individual treatment includes: pupil size, pre-operative higher-order aberrations and corneal thickness. A personalized nomogram to ensure uniformity in refractive results has also been developed. Dr. Johann Krüger has more than 15 years experience in Lasik surgery.

3. The Schwind AMARIS Excimer Laser:

After the corneal flap has been created, a specific type of laser, with a variable spot size up to one mm, is used for the Advanced Eye Laser Lasik treatment. This is called a “flying spot laser”. An eye tracking system is also used to follow any small eye movements during the ablation.

Iris registration technology replaces previous methods of acquiring accurate alignment. It is the first fully automated method of aligning and registering wavefront-guided corrections for Advanced Eye Laser Lasik treatments. It centres the treatment precisely, independent of changes in the pupil centre from measurement to treatment.

The laser uses a very small beam, which means that less energy is used to laser the cornea, resulting in more accurate ablations. This laser system is therefore safer, more predictable and more precise.

Advantages of the Advanced Eye Laser Lasik System include truly personalised eye laser treatment, which enables the surgeon to use the widest treatment zone possible, while preserving as much corneal tissue as possible (saves up to 30% corneal tissue). This leads to:

  • Quicker visual recovery time
  • Fewer fluctuations in vision during the recovery time
  • Fewer problems with glare and halos at night
  • Less chance of regression and the need for enhancement procedures

The FDA has approved the Advanced Eye Laser Lasik procedure as the first wavefront Lasik treatment for myopia, hyperopia and mixed astigmatism. Improved results are expected for every patient, but in particular for patients who suffer from irregular astigmatism and thin corneas.

Advanced Eye Laser Lasik FAQs

What is laser vision correction?

It is a procedure that can improve a wide range of vision problems for many people. The term LASIK is an acronym for a medical term (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) and as the name suggests, the procedure entails using a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea.

What is Advanced Eye Laser Lasik vision correction?

Advanced Eye Laser Lasik with Iris Registration is a WaveFront-guided excimer laser technology, where a personal and unique laser vision correction is designed for each individual eye. Just like a fingerprint, each person’s vision is 100 percent unique to their eyes. Up till now, a -2.00 diopter treatment for two different people has been the same. But no two people’s corneal curvatures and aberrations are exactly the same, even if their prescriptions are the same. With the Advanced Eye Laser Lasik System (WaveFront guided technology), this uniqueness is taken into account when designing a personalised laser pattern, and no two ‘treatment prescriptions’ are identical. It therefore makes sense that better results are expected for each individual with this system.

How does the procedure work?

WaveScan technology first measures each eye to detect all unique imperfections. This precise reading is then used to create a tailor-made treatment plan. The treatment information is then digitally sent to the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser system, which is used to treat the imperfections.

How does Advanced Eye Laser Lasik vision correction differ from standard LASIK?

The fact that this treatment is absolutely tailor-made to each patient is what sets it apart. WaveScan WaveFront technology is used to measure each eye’s unique imperfections. This way of measuring your refractive error is 25 times more accurate than a normal eye test, which is used for the standard Lasik procedure. The accuracy and precision of the treatment is also enhanced with Iris Registration technology. For more information about this please refer to our CustomVue Lasik information on this website.

What is Iris Registration Technology?

It is common for the pupil to shift positions between the time that a patient is measured and treated. To account for this IR, or Iris Registration technology, ensures that treatment is centred correctly.

Is this procedure approved by the FDA?

Yes, this laser vision correction treatment is FDA approved. It can potentially treat more than 94 percent* of the eligible population. That includes patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In addition, Advanced CustomVue is the first FDA-approved wavefront-guided treatment for high myopia (from -6 to -11 diopters). *Market Scope Data, U.S. Vision Population, 21 Years of Age or Older, 2005

How does Advanced Advanced Eye Laser Lasik treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism?

Cornea imperfections are the most common cause for these three types of vision problems. With CustomVue Lasik treatment, a unique, customised map of each eye is created with the help of the Wavescan WaveFront system. This map is used to reshape the cornea and allow light rays entering the eye to fall directly onto the macula and provide crisp, clear vision.

How accurate is it?

Before WaveScan, LASIK eye surgery was done according to the same methods of measurement that doctors use when prescribing glasses and contact lenses. The notable benefit of WaveScan technology is that it measures imperfections 25 times more precisely than standard methods.

What can the Advanced Eye Laser Lasik Procedure do for me?

It can help provide better vision than what you can have with glasses or contact lenses. Although results vary according to the type of condition that is treated, more than 95 percent of people involved as study participants were able to see well enough to pass a driving test once undergoing treatment. For more information on studies involved using laser vision correction, ask us now.

Who is a candidate for Advanced Eye Laser Lasik

You will need to see your ophthalmologist to determine if you are a candidate for the Advanced Advanced Eye Laser Lasik Procedure, but generally, if you are 21 years old or older, and wear contacts or glasses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or mixed astigmatism, you could very well benefit from a procedure like this.

We offer a free 30-minute suitability evaluation for people who are interested in refractive surgery, including Advanced Eye Laser  LASIK, and would like to find out whether they are a suitable candidate.

How does the procedure affect night vision?

Studies have shown that three times as many participants were happy with their night vision capabilities compared to what they experienced with glasses or contacts before treatment.

Will I Need Glasses or Contact Lenses After the Advanced Advanced Eye Laser Lasik Procedure?

Probably not, but individual results vary. It is highly unlikely that you will need to wear glasses or contacts for distance vision after the procedure. In results from an FDA clinical study, most participants achieved 20/20 vision. If you are over the age of 40, you may still need reading glasses, but these are all things that can be discussed in detail with your doctor before undergoing laser vision correction.
