Our Mandela Day Initiative

Every 18th of July, the world celebrates Mandela Day, commemorating the selfless deeds performed by one of South Africa’s struggle icons. The date is marked by individuals and organisations spending 67 minutes or more assisting their local community through random acts of kindness or charitable drives.

This year, Eye Laser Clinic has joined the Madiba Day campaign to aid those in our near-by area with better sight at absolutely no cost.

Who was Nelson Mandela?

Our former president and recently deceased legend, Nelson Mandela, is one of the country’s most recognisable struggle figures. Besides his statesmanship, he is known for spending 67 years of his life fighting against social injustice, which included being imprisoned for challenging the old Apartheid Government.

His words and actions helped thousands of disadvantaged people in Southern Africa, including us, and inspired the world to promote positive change anywhere possible. Therefore, we are honoured to play a small part in the International Nelson Mandela Day initiative and hope to bring something good to a deserving few.

Our Free Promotional Offer

Unfortunately, we cannot donate our time on the 18th of July. So on the day before, Thursday the 17th, between 08:00 and 12:00, we’ll give 20 people a free visual screening, and basic spectacles.

In order to qualify, you simply have to prove that you:

– Live in the Bellville area near Tygervalley Shopping Centre
– Can’t afford an eye test or glasses
– Have a pair of spectacles that are 5 years or older

The inability to pay for new specs can be due to unemployment, a low salary, limited state pension or lack of medical aid insurance. It doesn’t matter to us. Furthermore, we plan on taking a photo of you to put on our Facebook page, capturing the happy outcome of the day.

Please note that these tests are not meant to treat people with cataracts. We run a special surgery campaign called “Right to Sight” in September or October to help more serious visual impairments.

If you are interested in being screened and fitted for a new pair of glasses, phone us on 021 9100 300 to make an appointment. Only those who have booked their spot can be assisted.
