Advanced Custom Vue Lasik

Personalized Laser Vision Correction

A brand new excimer laser technology, CustomVue Lasik vision correction involves a personal and unique laser vision correction that is designed for each eye individually. Much like in the case of a fingerprint, each individual's vision is completely unique to their set of eyes. Up until recently, -2.00 diopter treatments for two or more different people have been interchangeable. However, no two individual's corneal curvatures and aberrations correspond exactly, even in the event of their prescriptions being the same. This fact is taken into account when creating a personalised laser pattern with the CustomVue System (wavefront-guided technology), and no two "treatment prescriptions" are the same. Thus improved outcomes can be expected for each person who undergoes treatment with the CustomVue Lasik system.

The VISX CustomVue Lasik System consists of the following procedures:

1. The VISX CustomVue Diagnostic workstation:

All patients who seek or are prescribed Wavefront Lasik treatment receive thorough diagnostic screening using specialised equipment. This includes:

The Orbscan II corneal topography, a process through which the whole cornea is analysed and the corneal curvature and thickness is measured.

WaveScan-based digital technology. This process determines the presence of pre-operative higher-order aberrations, as well as the singular imperfections that are inherent to each person's vision. A detailed map of the eye is produced, quite similar to a fingerprint. No two maps are identical - as a matter of fact, each procedure is designed according to the singular characteristics of the individual in question's eye. The information that is captured by means of the WaveScan technology is relayed to the laser, which provides an astonishing new level of accuracy. This improved level of measurement yields up to 25 times more accuracy than those standard methods used for prescribing spectacles and contact lenses.

This complete diagnostic information enables the surgeon to ascertain how the patient in question will benefit from CustomVue Lasik treatment.

If meaningful higher-order aberrations are detected (such as those found in cases of irregular astigmatism) CustomVue Lasik surgery would univocally improve the patient's quality of vision. CustomVue Lasik surgery utilises an optimised optical zone that lowers the risk for visual disturbances, such as halos and glare at night. Patients with high myopes or thin corneas benefit from the proven ability that Wavefront Lasik treatment has displayed in terms of reducing the amount of tissue removed for a given level of correction. Therefore, less tissue will have to be removed in order to achieve the desired results (saves up to 30% corneal tissue).

2. The CustomVue Lasik Treatment Calculation Software

The three main aspects taken into account when calculating individual treatment includes: pupil size, pre-operative higher-order aberrations and corneal thickness. A personalized nomogram to ensure uniformity in refractive results has also been developed. Dr. Johann Krüger has more than ten years experience in Lasik surgery.

3. The VISX Excimer Laser:

After the corneal flap has been created, a specific type of laser, with a variable spot size up to one mm, is used for the CustomVue Lasik treatment. This is called a "flying spot laser". An eye tracking system is also used to follow any small eye movements during the ablation.

Iris registration technology replaces previous methods of acquiring accurate alignment. It is the first fully automated method of aligning and registering wavefront-guided corrections for CustomVue treatments. It centres the treatment precisely, independent of changes in the pupil centre from measurement to treatment.

The laser uses a very small beam, which means that less energy is used to laser the cornea, resulting in more accurate ablations. This laser system is therefore safer, more predictable and more precise.

Advantages of the CustomVue Lasik System include truly personalised eye laser treatment, which enables the surgeon to use the widest treatment zone possible, while preserving as much corneal tissue as possible (saves up to 30% corneal tissue). This leads to:

  • Quicker visual recovery time
  • Fewer fluctuations in vision during the recovery time
  • Fewer problems with glare and halos at night
  • Less chance of regression and the need for enhancement procedures
Recently, the FDA has approved the CustomVue procedure as the first wavefront Lasik treatment for myopia, hyperopia and mixed astigmatism. Improved results are expected for every patient, but in particular for patients who suffer from irregular astigmatism and thin corneas.

In the early 1980's, they began looking at lasers to improve the precision and predictability of altering the shape of the cornea. Researchers found that the Excimer laser could remove tissue with up to 0.25 microns of accuracy. Now, in its second decade of use, the technologically advanced Excimer laser has added a tremendous amount of precision, control and safety to the surgical correction of vision errors. Using this remarkable technology, the cornea is reshaped to conform to your glasses or contact lenses.
