Computer Eye Strain

Eye Care for Computer Users

Computer work causes eyestrain even for people with perfect eyesight – follow our eye care advice to ensure that you avoid the often painful symptoms of computer-related eye problems. Common symptoms of eye strain could include the following:

  • Tired eyes
  • Headaches
  • Near-to-far blur (eyes take a while to focus when you look up from the computer screen)
  • Burning or irritated eyes

Our eye care clinic advises that computer users should always keep a few things in mind to reduce the amount of strain put on your visual system due to prolonged, close-up focusing. These include the following tips:

  1. Make sure that you don’t have a visual problem by visiting your Optometrist.
  2. If you do have glasses, make sure that you wear them as prescribed.
  3. Look up from the computer screen at least every ten minutes to relax the accommodation of your lenses.
  4. Concentrate on maintaining a good posture when sitting behind your desk – both feet flat, and thighs parallel to the floor. The screen must be right in front of you, so that you don’t have to twist at the waist.
  5. The screen must be at eye level, or slightly lower than eye level.
  6. The screen must be at least 50 cm away from you. The closer you sit to the screen, the more strain you put on your visual system.
  7. Try to keep reflections from lights and open windows on the screen to a minimum.
  8. Adjust the contrast to a comfortable level. It shouldn’t be too bright.
  9. One tends to blink the eyes less frequently when visually concentrating, leading to dry eyes. Using a tear supplement to keep the eyes moist often helps to maintain visual comfort.

Unfortunately, any prolonged close-up work or long hours of computer work is bound to cause computer eye strain, and there is no miracle cure for tired eyes. If you keep the above-mentioned tips in mind, you can keep unnecessary eye strain to a minimum. Speak to the eye specialists at a reputable eye clinic such as Eye Laser Clinic for more tips for healthy eyes.

In the early 1980’s, they began looking at lasers to improve the precision and predictability of altering the shape of the cornea. Researchers found that the Excimer laser could remove tissue with up to 0.25 microns of accuracy. Now, in its second decade of use, the technologically advanced Excimer laser has added a tremendous amount of precision, control and safety to the surgical correction of vision errors. Using this remarkable technology, the cornea is reshaped to conform to your glasses or contact lenses.
