Eye Laser Clinic: NEWSLETTER February 2008

Eye Care Awareness Week - October 2009

During the recent Eye Care Awareness Week in October 2009, many patients underwent free cataract surgery at the Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre. Most of these patients have been on a waiting list at state hospitals for a very long time, suffering from very poor vision due to dense cataracts.

The Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre offered their theatre facilities free of charge, and Dr. Johann Krüger performed the procedures at no cost. Several companies helped make it possible by donating intra-ocular lenses and other materials as well as eye drop medication that was used during the procedures.

A spokesperson from the eye clinic says that countrywide; more than 4000 less fortunate people underwent free surgery during Eye Care Awareness Week. The Eye Care Awareness Week takes place in October every year, with a different theme each time.

OSSA Congress – February 2010

The annual OSSA congress was held at Sun City in February 2010. All of the clinical personnel from the Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre attended this congress and leading eye specialist Dr. Krüger presented a talk on a new corneal transplant technique known as Descemet’s stripping and transplantation, and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty with the horizon keratome. This ground-breaking procedure is offered at our world-renowned eye clinic; contact us today for further information regarding any of our eye surgery procedures.

In the early 1980’s, they began looking at lasers to improve the precision and predictability of altering the shape of the cornea. Researchers found that the Excimer laser could remove tissue with up to 0.25 microns of accuracy. Now, in its second decade of use, the technologically advanced Excimer laser has added a tremendous amount of precision, control and safety to the surgical correction of vision errors. Using this remarkable technology, the cornea is reshaped to conform to your glasses or contact lenses.
