Eye Laser Clinic: NEWSLETTER June 2008
International Eye Surgery News
Dr. Johann Krüger has recently been invited by AMO Intralase and Visx
laser group in Egypt as a speaker at the Middle East congress in Egypt
in January 2008. He was also recently an invited speaker at the America
Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Chicago in April 2008,
to present a paper in one of their courses.
His article on multifocal
intra-ocular lenses also featured in the European Review Ophthalmology
Times in January.
We are very excited to welcome Dr. Alan Sara to our practice. He received
an Economics degree from the University of Cape Town in 1993 and then
went on to study Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital. After qualifying
with an MBChB in 1998, he did his Internship training at Edendale
Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, and started working in Ophthalmology.
He spent a few years training in ophthalmology, in England, at the
Prince Charles eye care centre, Windsor. He then returned to Cape
Town to complete his Specialist Registrar training at Groote Schuur
Hospital where he became a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmology,
South Africa in 2006. He then went on to do further training at the
John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he did a Fellowship in Surgical
and Medical Retinal disease.
Dr Sara started working in private practice in Cape Town in the beginning
of 2008 and also does sessional work at Tygerberg Hospital.
CustomVue Lasik
The VISX CustomVue Lasik eye treatment procedure with iris registration tailors a distinct
laser correction for each individual - in fact each treatment is "designed"
by the unique characteristics of the individuals' eyes. WaveScan technology
captures unique imperfections in each individual's vision that could
not have been measured before. This new level of measurement provides
25-times more precision than measurements using standard methods for
glasses and contact lenses. WaveScan technology produces a detailed
map of the eye - much like a fingerprint, no two are alike and this
information translates into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions
for the laser. WaveScan transfers these digital treatment instructions
to the laser, providing a new level of precision and accuracy which
has never before been seen in Laser eye treatments.
VISX's FDA clinical study results were remarkable. Among other things,
at one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure for low to moderate
miopes, 100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving
test without glasses or contacts, and 98% of the clinical study participants
could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts.
Multifocal intra-ocular lenses
As we perform daily activities such as reading, watching television or working at the computer, our eyes are constantly focusing on objects at varying distances - up close, far away and everything in-between. The ability to quickly change focus throughout this range of vision is called accommodation. Unfortunately, this ability diminishes as we grow older, causing us to become dependent on bifocals or reading glasses. However, multifocal intra-ocular lens implants were designed to provide quality near to distance vision. For most patients, multifocal IOL’s deliver excellent near and distance vision and good intermediate vision without reading glasses or bifocals.
Free suitability evaluation
If you are unsure whether you are a suitable candidate for refractive laser eye treatment, why not make use of our free suitability evaluation offer. This involves a free consultation with one of our ophthalmic assistants and includes an evaluation of your refractive status and a corneal topography to measure your corneal thickness. We will also supply you with all the information you need about the procedure and answer any questions you might have. Please call us on (021) 9100 300 to schedule an appointment.
Diabetic Eye Clinic
If you have diabetes this does not necessarily mean that your sight
will be affected, but there is a higher risk. If your diabetes is
well controlled then you are less likely to have problems, or they
may be less serious. Most sight loss due to diabetes can be prevented,
but it is vital that it is diagnosed early. This can only be detected
by a detailed examination of the eye. Therefore regular, annual eye
examinations are extremely important, as you may not realise that
there is anything wrong with your eyes until it is too late.
At The Tygervalley Eye and Laser Centre, we offer a special service
for our Diabetic patients. We measure visual acuity (the strength
of your sight) and can take digital photographs of the back of the
eye with a non-mydriatic retinal camera (no dilation of the pupils
necessary) to detect any diabetic
eye disease or changes of diabetic retinopathy. These investigations
will detect any changes which require treatment to preserve sight.
The clinic can also diagnose the presence of cataracts which may also
require laser eye treatment.
